Obituary of Greta Jane Peterson

Greta Jane (Symons) Peterson passed away peacefully at the Lighthouse of Superior in Betty's Harbor Alzheimer's Unit on Friday, Dec. 17, 2016. Jane was born to William Geech and Florence (Johnson) Symons on Sept. 5, 1928. She was a graduate of Duluth Central High School in June of 1946. She was married to Myron "Mike" Peterson who lost his life to cancer in 1994. The two were married just short of 43 years. Besides being a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Jane had been an at-home secretary for Jeno Paulucci during his Chung King years typing at night in her home. She was also a Teacher's Aide at Grant Elementary School and a Senior Clerk Typist for the Humanities and English Departments at the University of Minnesota Duluth from which she retired. Jane (and her side kick Gwen LaFrinier) were Den Mothers for Cub Scouts. She volunteered as Room Mother at Grant Elementary. Together, Jane and Myron were Guardians for Bethel No. 2 Job's Daughters. Jane also served as a Girl Scout Leader and she volunteered as Secretary for Class Reunions of 1946 for Duluth Central High School. She was an avid knitter, swimmer, golfer and traveler with the AARP. Jane was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Wyllys (Symons) Janssen; brothers, Jack R. Symons and William A. Symons; nephew, William J. Symons and her loving husband, Myron F. Peterson. Jane is survived by her children, Thomas M. (Cindy) Peterson and Janet (Paul) St. Hilaire; four grandchildren, Kristofer (Jodi) Peterson, Kara Jayne (Joe) Milleker, Kevin Michael (Mellissa) Peterson, and Janette Jane St. Hilaire; eight great-grandchildren, Jordan Reeder, Alex Peterson-Hanson, Karly Peterson, Carter Milleker, Curtis Peterson, Aaron Peterson, Madison Milleker and Thomas Peterson; as well as several nieces and nephews, and hundreds of friends who she touched with her graceful love. The family would like to thank the "family" at Lighthouse of Superior and Betty's Harbor staff for the gentle, patient and loving care for the years that Jane was a resident. Special thank you to Urmila Tokekar, Betty's Harbor Coordinator and Breanna. GATHERING OF FAMILY AND FRIENDS: 9 a.m. until the 10 a.m. memorial service on Saturday, April 15, 2017 in the Cremation Society of Duluth. Tom said "lunch will be served".
