Obituary of Richard Harold Garty

GARTY, Richard Harold, age 93, born in Chicago, Illinois and recently of Maple Grove, MN - 09 November, 1923 ~ 18 December, 2016. Preceded in death by his first wife, Colleen Garty (Herron) in 1984 and second wife, Bonnalea Garty (Miller) in 1992; sister, Joan Oglesby; mother, Edna Mae Quinlivan (Jacques) and her husband, Larry; birth father, Harold Garty. He is survived by his loving sister, Lois Ogle. He will be deeply missed by his children, Steven (Colleen), Chris Garty; grandchildren, Patrick, Jeffrey, Joseph; many nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family that all called him “Grandpa”. United States Marine Corps 30 year veteran Master Gunnery Sergeant. At age 18, he was stationed at Pearl Harbor during the Dec. 7th attack, and later served in the Pacific Theater, Korea, Okinawa, and Vietnam. He retired from the Corps in 1971 and worked at Litton Microwave until his retirement. He was a devoted supporter of the Boy Scouts of America for many years and presented many an Eagle Scout with their American Flag. He was the youth activities coordinator for the Fleet Reserve Assoc. (FRA) in Florida and Minnesota and a lifetime member of the Pearl Harbor Survivor Assoc., V.F.W., and American Legion. Family and Friends will gather 11am Monday, 26 December, 2016 for a Time of Sharing at Cremation Society of MN, 7835 Brooklyn Blvd., Brooklyn Park with visitation 1 hour prior.
