Obituary of Madalyn Elizabeth Smith

Madalyn Elizabeth Smith, 89, of Duluth, passed away on Friday, Jan. 27, 2017 in Viewcrest Health Center. Madalyn was born in Superior, on April 8, 1927 to Emerson and Katherine (Knuth) Summers. She grew up in the Wrenshall area and graduated from Wrenshall High School as class valedictorian. Madalyn had three children, Kathy, John and Kevin. In April of 1968 she was united in marriage to Robert Smith. Throughout this period Madalyn worked for GMAC Financing and retired after 30 years of service. Madalyn enjoyed traveling, particularly to Civil War battle sites, as well as planting and tending to her spring flowers. She was a hardworking and devoted mother and wife, who will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents; grandchild, James; and two brothers, Jack and Donald. Madalyn is survived by her husband, Robert; children, Kathy (Michael) Gustin, John (Bobbie) Cook and Kevin (Rebekah) Smith; grandchildren, Charlie, Bobbi Jo, Bryan, Rachel and Shawn; many great-grandchildren and many extended family members and friends. The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Viewcrest as well as the parish nurses, especially Sharon. VISITATION: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, 2017 in First memorial Funeral Chapel 4100 Grand Ave. Duluth. Visitation will continue from 12:30 p.m. until the 1:30 p.m. funeral service on Friday, Feb. 3, in Lakeview Covenant Church, 1001 Jean Duluth Road Duluth.
