Obituary of Myrrhene Dorothy Allen Crawford

Myrrhene Dorothy Allen Crawford died peacefully, surrounded by her loving family on February 18, 2017. She was born April 1932 in St. Paul, Minnesota to Theodore (Ted) Allen and Ermine Hall Allen and was the granddaughter of Minnesota civil rights leader Stephen Edward Hall. She attended Hill Elementary School and the Lindsey School for the Physically Handicapped in St. Paul. Myrrhene graduated with honors from St. Paul Central High School in 1949. She attended the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities and graduated with a B.S. in Primary Education. She was working on a Masters in Teaching the Gifted and Talented. She wrote for the Central Cehisen Newspaper and a teen newspaper called Teen Times. She was also a weekly columnist for the Minneapolis Spokesman. Myrrhene was a Dictaphone Operator for the American Red Cross during the Korean War. She was very proud of this position sending messages to get the servicemen leaves home. The Loafers Club crowned her Queen of Hearts in 1954. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, the Forty Club, Jack and Jill Club, and THE Bridge Club. She was an esteemed elementary school teacher in both St. Paul and Minneapolis Public School Systems and taught at both Field and Hale Elementary Schools for 35 years. She was a member of St. George’s Episcopal Church in St. Louis Park and had memberships at St. Thomas Episcopal in Minneapolis along with St. Phillips Episcopal in St. Paul. Myhrrene shared her Mother’s passions for gardening, cooking, and traveling. She loved classic R&B and Jazz music, and encouraged her children and grandchildren to explore their creative minds. She is preceded in death by her loving husband Marvin and is survived by her sister Marcheta (Robert) Mines of California, son Stephen, daughters Kim (Rick) Caldwell of Texas and Sherrie (Michael) Edwards of California, granddaughters Kathleen, Erin (Andrew) Fleming-Crawford, Megan and Jasmine Caldwell of Oklahoma, Amber (Alaric) Singletary of California, and Shamar (Eric) Shanks of California; great grandchildren Elliot and Max Larson, and Audrey Fleming-Crawford, Sidney, Christian, and Andrew Singletary, Xavier and Kennedy Shanks; and great-great granddaughter Violet Currier-Larson plus many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 11 at the Cremation Society of MN, 7110 France Ave So, Edina. Visitation 5:00PM Memorial Service 6:00PM.
