Obituary of James H Johannes

Johannes, James H. 92 of Mpls. passed away March 22, 2017. Jim was born March 30, 1924 in Howards Grove, WI and is the last surviving member in the family of eight brothers and sisters, his special twin sister Jane having passed away just over a year ago. After high school Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy, trained as a baker and spent WWII on the battleship New Jersey in the Pacific. He was proud to have been in Tokyo Harbor on VJ Day. After returning from the war Jim married the love of his life Arlene Bender. They moved to Minneapolis where he attended Dunwoody Institute for baking, later he furthered his education, attending night classes at the U of M. Returning to Wisconsin after graduation he headed the bakery for Prange's Department Stores. In 1955 Jim was offered a position with General Mills Research and moved the family to Linden Hills which has been the family residence and headquarters for holidays and family events ever since. His department was credited with numerous patents and new product launches during his tenure with G.M. Jim always had a song in his heart and was a member of the Linden Hills Congregational Church choir for 50+ years. Those close to Jim knew him to be humming a tune as he went about his daily activities, he will be missed. Preceded in death by grandson Eric. Survived by wife of 71 years Arlene, sons Jack (Joy), Steve (Lorelei), Tony (Linda), 2 grandchildren and 8 greatgrandchildren. Funeral 6:30pm Wednesday, April 5th at Linden Hills United Church of Christ, 4200 Upton Ave. visitation one half hour before. Private interment at a later date, Lakewood Cemetery.
