Obituary of Gloria J. Shorts

Gloria Shorts, 75, passed away on April 1, 2017 in Minneapolis, Minnesota after battling chronic illnesses. Gloria was born in Malvern, Arkansas on December 12, 1941. At an early age, she moved with her family to California and attended San Pedro High School. Gloria began a long career in nursing after completing the School of Nursing program at L.A. County Hospital in 1963, where she was a member of the Philathian Honor Society. Gloria received a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Cal State L.A. in 1972 and continued her education by obtaining a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner certification from UCLA in 1973. Recognized as a trailblazer in nursing, Gloria was known for her problem-solving skills and her ability to shoulder immense responsibility, as demonstrated by her management roles at a young age. Gloria married Riley S. Shorts in 1965. They resided in Los Angeles with their two children. She enjoyed introducing her family to new experiences. An avid sports fan, she also enjoyed watching professional and college football as well as basketball. Gloria will be remembered for her intelligence, independent thinking and devotion to her family. Gloria is survived by her sisters, Julia and Janice; brother William; children, Charles Steven (Kristen) and Yvonne (Todd); grand-children, Nicholas, Jordan, Savannah and little Gloria; nieces and nephews; extended family; and family friends. Gloria was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy; sister Renee; and husband. A private family gathering to celebrate Gloria’s life will be held in California.
