Obituary of Janice Elizabeth Benson

Janice Elizabeth Benson, 83 of Duluth died July 18, 2018 at the Benedictine Health Center in Duluth. She was born on March 15, 1935, to Carl and Elsa (Lindquist) Benson in Duluth. She attended Lincoln Grade School and Denfeld High School. After graduating from Denfeld in 1953, Janice enrolled at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, graduating in 1957 with a BA in business and economics. For a time she lived in Minneapolis, working for an insurance company, before relocating to Los Angeles, where she worked at Hughes Aircraft and at Beverly Hills Doctors Hospital. In 1960, upon receiving word of her father's death, Janice returned to Duluth and moved back into the family home on West 11th Street to share with her brother Charles in caring for their mother. She became a medical secretary to Dr. John V. Thomas, Duluth, until her retirement in 1987. In her younger years, Janice enjoyed train trips with her mother, traveling to California to visit Elsa's relatives, and to New York and frequently to Minneapolis. In 1951, Janice traveled to Sweden with her mother and spent the summer visiting relatives there, including her grandfather, John Lindquist, of Alfta, Sweden. Janice is preceded in death by her father in 1960 and her mother in 1992. She is survived by her brother, Charles Benson, Duluth; cousins, Carol (David) Chilberg, Duluth, Patricia (Walter) Benson Franke, Henderson, Nevada; and Louise (Dennis) Benson Griffin, Woodbury, Minnesota; and nephews and nieces. The family extends a sincere thank you to the staff at the Benedictine Health Center and Lutheran Social Service of Minnesota for the excellent care Janice received over the past four years.
