Obituary of Darryl Philip Ekstrom
Darryl Philip "Boots" Ekstrom, age 73, passed away July 24, 2018, after a long struggle with Alzheimer's disease. Darryl grew up in Duluth, MN and graduated with honors from Denfeld High School, where he was a celebrated athlete, lettering in basketball and softball. He then graduated from the U of M Duluth with a degree in finance. He was preceded in death by his father, Phil; mother, Orphy; son, Mark; and brother-in-law, Chas Fairbrother. He is survived by his loving wife, Charlotte; daughter, Steffany (Kurt) Truax; Charlotte's children, Tony (Chantal) Paulson, Kate (Pete) Byers, Tim (Anita) Paulson; grandchildren, Lucas, Nick, Keale, Matisse, James and Will; sister, Joyce Fairbrother; former wife, Sandra Ekstrom; and many beloved relatives and friends. He had a passion for the outdoors and spent years canoeing and camping in the BWCA, skiing in Colorado, biking on the Luce Line trail and boating on the St. Croix river. He also enjoyed playing racquetball and handball at the Minneapolis Athletic Club, where he was a member for years and developed strong friendships. Darryl had a very successful career in investment banking, both with retail investment securities firms as well as with his own firm, where he advised and sold private equity investments. He was a man of integrity, honesty, generosity, and warmth who touched many people. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Mayo Clinic Alzheimer's Research Foundation.
