Obituary of Helen Malquist

Helen Malquist, age 82, of Alexandria, died June 3, 2017 of complications from Parkinson ’s Disease. Helen was born in Willmar, Minnesota to Carl and Verna Sandberg. She was raised on a small farm near Pennock, where she attended a small one room school house. She graduated from Willmar High School, class of 1952. Helen married LeRoy Malquist on July 10, 1953. Together they raised two daughters, Colleen and Mary on a small family farm near Kerkhoven. They later moved to Alexandria where Helen continued her banking career and later retired. Through the years, Helen enjoyed traveling, Itasca State Park, being creative with different art mediums, memorable holidays and camping with her children and grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents and son-in-law, Bill Hern. Survived by husband, LeRoy; daughters, Colleen Hern and Mary (Bob Cunningham) Kokula; grandchildren: Ben (Bailey Peterka) Dale, Brady (Jessica) Hern and Alex Kokula; great-grandchild, Sam Dale; sister, Elinor Murrow; brother, Bill Sandberg; former son-in-law, John Kokula and other family members and friends. Memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, June 9, 2017 at the Chapel at Country Manor Campus, 520 1st St. NE, Sartell, MN 56377. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Minnesota.
