Obituary of Wallace James McKay

McKay, Wallace James 92, died of cancer on June 6, 2017 at his daughter's home in Lakeville, MN. Wallace was the last surviving grandchild of Peter and Margaret (McNee) Mckay who immigrated to the United States from Scotland in 1856. He was born May 18, 1925 in Brainerd, Minnesota, graduating from Brainerd High School in 1943. Eager to support the war effort he enlisted in the Navy upon turning 18, even skipping the high school's graduation ceremony. He served from 1943-1947. He met and married Margaret Dingwall while attending the University of Minnesota and enjoyed nearly 66 wonderful years together. Having taught in Bertha and Byron, MN, he returned to the U of M and completed his Master's in Education Administration. Wallace was hired by the Minnetonka Public School District as their Director of Business Services and worked there for 30 years until his retirement in 1985. He and Margaret enjoyed traveling and loved their summers spent on Lake Hubert, Nisswa, MN. Wallace is preceded in death by his wife Margaret, parents George and Lydia, brothers Peter and George, sisters Mabel Gilbert and Lt. Col. Hortense McKay. Survived by children Peter (Roxanne)of Temecula, CA, David (Ranee)of Minneapolis, and Patricia (Tim) Broback of Lakeville, brother in laws Dr. Howard Steele, Kingston, ON, Dr. Ian Gregory, Columbus, OH, and sister in law Karen Dingwall, Toronto, ON; as well as many nieces and nephews. Wallace was a generous and positive role model to grandchildren Jenna, Whitney, Torey, Christopher, Aparna, and Ashwini and great grandfather to Mia, Ellie, Sage, Avery, Kieran and Nikhil. A Celebration of Life is scheduled on JUNE 20, 2017 at The Gardens of Castle Rock, Northfield, MN from 11-3 with a Remembrance Service at 11:30. Special thanks to the staff at Methodist Hospital Hospice. As per Wallace's request no flowers or memorials please. A Private Interment will occur later this summer at Scotland Cemetery, Rural Fillmore County, Minnesota.
