James Monte Nead passed away December 30, 2022. Born in 1946 in Dayton to parents Dennis and Miriam Nead, Jim grew up in Huntsville and New Orleans, graduating from Ben Franklin High School. After completing a BS degree from MIT he moved to Minneapolis to work for Control Data as a computer programmer. Mid-career, Jim made the difficult switch to Open Source programming, an approach he preferred for both ethical and technical reasons. He retired in 2017. His favorite pursuit was reading, especially linguistics, psychology and science fiction. He enjoyed camping and gardening and making bad puns. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, Fred King. He is survived by siblings Arthur (Caroline) Nead, Margaret Nead King and Julia Nead, all of New Orleans; brother-in-law Michael (Donna) Smith of Mission Viejo; his nieces Caroline Somerville Nead and Theresa (Anton) Geurts and nephew Matthew (Kelly) Smith; a grandnephew and two grandnieces; and his wife of 44 years, Deborah Smith.
