Obituary of Richard L. Smith

R.L. Smith, 83, of Duluth, passed away at home August 1, 2017 with his wife at his side. R.L. was born January 8, 1934 to Leo M. and Charlotte (NEE SMITH) Smith in Cloquet. His family moved to Two Harbors when R.L. was a young boy. R.L. attended Two Harbors High School where he excelled on the high school track & field team and football. In 1951, at age 17, he enlisted in U.S. Naval Air where he received an honorable discharge in 1954. Upon returning to Two Harbors he worked various jobs including construction powderman and brakeman for the DMIR, while attending UMD part-time to obtain a teaching degree. He taught at Two Harbors High School from 1969-1994 where he coached cross country and the homegame announcer for the Agates. He is survived by his wife and best friend of 45 years, Peggy J Smith of Duluth; sons Steven J Smith of Two Harbors; Larry W. (Michelle) Smith and grandson Noah of South Lake, TX, Thomas E (Vickie) Smith of Fort Worth, TX, Herbert A. (Stacey) Smith and grandchildren Kailie, Hannah, Emily, Logan and Ainsley of Eldridge, IA; sister Margo Bonneville of St. Paul and brother Larry J Smith of Duluth, MN; and numerous family members. A gathering of family and friends will be held Saturday, August 5th 2017 from 3-5 pm at Cremation Society of Minnesota, 4100 Grand Ave., Duluth, MN.
