Obituary of Richard Herman McNutt

Dick was given the gift of life 84 years ago. He entered into eternal life on August 8, 2018. Dick's story started on September 27, 1933 in Duluth, MN. Born to Dr. John & Elsie McNutt, Dick attended Lab School through the 8th grade and at the age of 13 traveled to New Hampshire to attend Prep School at Phillips Exeter Academy. There he excelled in academics and athletics serving as captain of the hockey team. Dick went on to Harvard where he attained his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1955. A consummate entrepreneur and successful businessman, Dick built many businesses; most notably Inter City Oil (ICO). Dick had an infectious personality. He had a keen interest in people and developed amazing relationships throughout his life. He had a unique ability to get to know people by showing a genuine interest in others, listening, and sharing his warm smile. Dick was also an amazing storyteller. His stories held us captive, made us laugh, and taught us valuable lessons. Perkins on London Road was one of his local hangouts where he shared those stories with his many friends. His stories and love of life will be missed. Golfing was one of Dick's favorite hobbies. He enjoyed many rounds played at Northland Country Club where he was a member for many years. Many lifelong friendships were formed on the golf course and it was a special place where he shared his love of golf with his children and grandchildren. Dick's generosity, humble nature, amazing wisdom and intellect, along with his sense of humor, boisterous laugh and smile will be remembered by all. Dick and his wife Patti (Viner) were married in 1997 and shared 21 years of love, laughs, travels and spending time with family. They wintered in Fort Myers, Florida where Dick loved waking up to the glorious Florida sunshine and looking out at the beautiful waters of their home at Miromar Lakes. A very special tradition started by Dick's parents was the annual family reunion spent at Ruttgers' Bay Lake Lodge. Every July, his children, grandchildren, sister and her family would join for several days of fun, food and laughter. These family gatherings have been a true blessing. Dick's spirit is carried on by his wife Patti (Viner), children Richard (Fatima), Tom (Diane), Philip, Connie (Randy Hart), Edward, David (Pamela), Mary (John Griffin), Christina (Ajit Sequeira) and stepsons Jeremy (Amity) Bennett, Jason (Willie) Bennett, 22 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, his twin sister Margie (Gordon) Meyer, many nieces, nephews, and his longtime friend & business partner Judy Weber. He is reunited with his sons Joel and Paul, his siblings Bob and Jean, and his parents John and Elsie McNutt; a glorious reunion. He was a wonderful man that was loved, cherished and will be missed. Boom! A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 Saturday, August 18, 2018, at Pike Lake Presbyterian Church, 5611 Martin Road, Duluth, MN with visitation starting at 10:00. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you make a donation to the National Kidney Foundation at www.kidney.org.
