Obituary of Hazel J Winton
Duluth, MN - Hazel J. Winton, 92, formerly of Iron River, MI, passed
away Monday August 21, 2017, in Duluth, MN at the home of her
daughter and son-in-law where she resided. The youngest of nine
children, Hazel was born March 5, 1925 in Stambaugh, MI to Anton and
Clara Westerdahl. She grew up in the Riverside area and attended Iron
River schools.
Hazel married Lloyd L. Winton on July 28, 1946. They purchased a home
in the Forbes location of Mineral Hills and had two children Randall and Deborah. They spent
many happy years there. In 1966 the family moved to Minneapolis where Lloyd worked at the
Thermo King Corporation as a machinist. After Lloyds retirement in 1985, Hazel and Lloyd moved
back to Iron River. They were members of the First Lutheran Church of Iron River, where Hazel
was actively involved with the quilting circle and the alter guild. She was an exceptional
seamstress and was also talented at crochet. She crocheted gifts for her family, angel ornaments
for the church, as well as hundreds of baby sweaters and booties that were donated to Lutheran
World Relief. Hazel was a devoted, loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.
She was proud of her Scandinavian heritage, loved gardening, cooking, making raspberry jam,
and traveling with Lloyd to visit their children and grandchildren.
Hazel is survived by her daughter Deborah and son-in-law Chuck Richards, daughter-in-law
Susana Aries-Winton, seven grandchildren: Lisa (Koert) Van Eps, Kaye (Jim) Rosvold, Nikko Aries,
Rita Richards-Hoffman, Anthony (Melissa) Richards, William (Andrea) Richards, and Daniel
Richards, nine great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Hazel was preceded in death
by her son Randy (2015), her husband Lloyd (2016), three brothers: Milton, Marvin and David,
four sisters: Irene, Alice, Myrtle and Dolores and one half-brother Arthur.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on September 30, 2017 at Peace United Church of
Christ in Duluth, MN. Hazel will be laid to rest alongside Lloyd at the Fort Snelling National
Cemetery, Minneapolis, MN
