Obituary of Jack Lorin Fithian
Fithian, Jack Lorin (b. 6/8/1934) left this world on September 9 at the age of eighty-three, five months after being diagnosed with MDS. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marylee Christensen Fithian, his three daughters, Lauren, Leslie and Allison, foster daughter April, ten grandchildren, and two great grandchildren (with another on the way!). Jack was born in Mason City, Iowa, and spent his childhood there building tree forts and go-carts with his friends, hunting for agates and crayfish, and swimming in Clear Lake. As a young teen his family moved to Minneapolis, where he lived for most of his life. He attended North High School, where he was known as an excellent pianist and tennis player (Minnesota State Doubles Runner-Up, 1951). Jack attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned a BA and MA in Psychology, and a PhD (abd) in Education Administration. He committed himself to a long career working in special education as a counselor and an administrator. Beyond his professional life of service to others, he was one to always extend a warm hand to those in need, and was active throughout his life in many church and community groups helping others. Jack was known by all who met him as one of the kindest, most caring people they have ever known. He was also a character and had a great sense of humor. He loved to go on walks, attend concerts, hang out in local coffee shops, and take road trips. He was especially drawn to California, and after retiring spent ten years living among the redwoods of Sonoma County. He loved playing piano and listening to classical music, as well as watching a good cop show on TV. He loved a cook out, Chardonnay, and hot fudge sundaes with whipped cream. But most of all he loved his family and we will forever love him. Memorial celebration will be held Tuesday, September 19, 1:30 pm, at Richfield United Methodist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Richfield UMC or the Southern Poverty Law Center.
