Obituary of Maynard C Burt

Owatonna, MN- Maynard C. Burt, 96, of Owatonna died September 14, 2017 at Homestead Hospice House. Maynard was born June 15, 1921 in Winona, MN; son of Allen and Roberta Burt of Utica, MN. He graduated from St. Charles High School and Winona State University. Maynard was drafted into the U.S. Air Force in 1942. On April 27, 1944, he married Dorothy Millar of Winona, MN in the Yale University Chapel. During the long years of World War II they lived in New Haven, CT, Urbane, IL, Belleville, IL, Macon, GA and Spokane, WA. Once he was discharged from the service in 1946, the Burts moved to Dodge Center, MN where Maynard was a teacher and Principal at the local high school. In 1950, they moved to Owatonna when Maynard had the opportunity to join Jostens. In 1961, they moved to Red Wing, MN where Maynard continued his career with Jostens. After retiring in 1984, they moved back to Owatonna to enjoy their golden years. During his long retirement Maynard enjoyed six trips to Europe and 18 winters at Venture Out in Mesa, AZ, where he played Paddle Tennis and Pickle Ball. He was a member of the Bicycle Club and rode 15-18 miles weekly. He also enjoyed gardening and was a voracious reader. Maynard was a member of the Steele County Historical Society, United Methodist Church and Golden K. Kiwanis Club. Maynard is survived by his daughter Sandra Schmidt of Maplewood, MN; grandson Christopher Schmidt of Brooklyn, NY; and several cousins. Maynard was preceded in death by Dorothy and his parents. A celebration of life for Maynard will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, September 23, at the Owatonna United Methodist Church. There will be a brief memorial service followed by fellowship and refreshments. The Rev. Loren Olson will officiate. Memorials are preferred for the Owatonna United Methodist Church, Steele County Historical Society, Homestead Hospice House of Owatonna or the donor's choice.
