Obituary of Glenn Charles Maxham

Glenn Charles Maxham, 88, of Duluth passed away from natural causes on Monday, September 10, 2018. Glenn was born in Rockford, Illinois to Edward and Mildred Maxham on July 24, 1930. He graduated from Winona Senior High, Brown Broadcasting Institute and UMD. Glenn served in the Army and as an announcer and disc jockey in Tokyo for the Armed Forces Radio playing requests for the troops to keep their spirits going. He was known for his long broadcasting and news career in Duluth working at WEBC, WDSM, KDAL and WDSE (PBS) as the creator and producer of Venture North. Later he formed Maxham Film Productions and Upper Midwest Videos to educate students on the environment. He was also passionate about teaching and attending classes at the University for Seniors at UMD. Glenn's career high points included his interview with John F. Kennedy, Hubert Humphrey and Albert Woolson, the last surviving Union Army soldier in the Civil War. He was also proud of his one flight with the Blue Angels in Duluth. Those who knew him well enjoyed his marvelous story telling of important history, his international travels (34 countries), and his philanthropic endeavors. He spent countless hours on environmental issues relating to Lake Superior, pollution, our fishing industry, forests and wildlife. This year he was focused on a project for the 100th Anniversary of the Fire of 1918 (Moose Lake to Duluth). Glenn was a photo journalist, a historian, avid reader, writer and author of two books. His greatest pride and joy was his family. Glenn is survived by those who dearly loved him; children Kristine Dwyer (Patrick) of Barnes, WI and Florence, AZ; Scott Maxham (Joyce) of Waupaca, WI; Karen Hardy (Charles) of San Antonio, TX; grandchildren Kelsey Jimenez (John), Kyra Kopetsky (John), Chase Hardy, Paige Hardy, Holly and Elly Maxham; a great grandson Clark Glenn Jimenez, nephew and niece Rick and Susan Bryant, and his Friday breakfast group with dear friends. Visitation: 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by the 11:00 a.m. Celebration of Life service, Saturday, September 29th at Peace United Church of Christ, 1111 N. 11th Ave. E. in Duluth. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted toward a memorial bench by Lake Superior and local environmental causes Glenn supported. Arrangements by Cremation Society of Minnesota, Duluth.
