Obituary of William L. Utick

William L. Utick passed away on Sunday Nov. 19th from complications of Parkinson 's disease. Bill was born 1-12-1939 in Duluth to Evelyn (Christensen) and Leonard Utick. He grew up in the Chester Park Neighborhood, graduated from East High School, briefly attended UMD and then left for California. When he returned to Duluth he got into the food business working at Interlochen Country Club in Mpls, East Bay Hotel in Grand Marais, Automatic Vendors of Duluth, the London Inn and finished up his career in food service at UMD. He married Karen Sloan and this September was their 50th wedding anniversary. They have one daughter Shelby Soumis. In 2003 Bill was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and with Parkinson's not long after. He managed both diseases very well for a long time, but the last two years were very difficult for him as the Parkinson's progressed. Bill was very artistic and talented. Many friends and family were gifted one of his beautiful stained glass windows. His artistic flair worked its way into his cooking, gardening and home decorating. Bill enjoyed classic cars. He had a 54 and a 55 chev. Other interests included sports (he followed both the Minnesota Twins and Minnesota Vikings.) He was a lover of all animals and always had a dog. He looked forward each year to the Bayfront Blues Fest. He was also an avid reader. Bill was happiest working outside. He enjoyed keeping a beautiful manicured yard. He was a unique individual with a quirky sense of humor. He will be missed. Preceded in death by Mother Evelyn, Father Leonard, Stepmother Anne and Stepsister Patricia Johnson. He is survived by his wife Karen and Daughter Shelby (Ian) Soumis, brother in law Jack Sloan (Denise) of North Beach Maryland, Nieces Katie and Jennifer and their mother Jean Sloan, two nephews Steve and Chris Johnson. He is also survived by the 4 legged family member Maddie. Bill did not want a funeral service but he gave an ok to a party. So in the spring there will be a gathering for family and friends to remember Bill and celebrate his life. If desired, donations made be made to Animal Allies Humane Society in Bills name. Rest easy now Bill. You don't have to worry about when it's time for the next pills.
