Obituary of Shirley Jean Hammarstedt
Shirley Jean Hammarstedt, known affectionately to family and friends as ‘Chuckie’, passed away peacefully on July 13, 2022, at the age of 97. She was born June 14, 1925, in Duluth, MN to Octavius and Gertrude (Tischer) Clark. She was the 4th of their 5 children. She married Harry Hammarstedt on October 30th, 1948. She spent the last 72 years at their home in Lester Park where she and her husband raised their 3 children.
Chuckie worked in the grocery business, first at her father’s store, Clark’s Market, one of the original ‘super’ markets in Duluth, and then as an owner of St. Louis Cash Market, with her husband of 60 years.
Chuckie loved the outdoors, especially her family’s cabin on Sunset Lake, which her father bought when she was 4. She loved flowers and was an avid gardener. She was a member of Lester Park United Methodist Church and was very active in the Friendship Circle and making pasties. She delivered meals on wheels for years. She was smart, wise, soft spoken, always practical, and like her father, had a dry wit. She was greatly loved and will be deeply missed.
She is preceded in death by her parents Ockie and Gertie, her husband Harry (in 2008), her siblings and their spouses (including her dear sister Ginny) and her sister-in-law & brother-in law.
She is survived by Ross (Patty), Van (Casey) and Jean (Dave). 6 Grandchildren Jay, Jon, Kelsi, Mikayla, Noah and Ollie. 2 Great-Grandchildren Sagan and Cobalt.
Visitation and Service will be at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, Duluth, Saturday August 6th. 9 AM visitation and 10 AM funeral. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Head of the Lakes United Way, Duluth MN.
