Obituary of Leon Edward Simich

Leon Edward Simich, Architect, died December 21, 2017 at the age of 91. Leon was born at home on June 30, 1926. His parents were Mike & Ruby Simich. His father celebrated the birth of his first son by roasting a pig for family and friends (and discreetly serving alcohol too.). Sisters Lila, Valorie & brother Lloyd all grew-up together in their house on West 52nd St. As a youngster, Leon met Rodney Hietala & Leonard Viergutz. They would be close friends for more than 80 years. He valued their friendship & spoke highly of them always. After serving in the U.S. Navy during WWII, Leon married his wife Betty, on December 28, 1946. They would love & be faithful to each other for more than 70 years. On their first date, they went to the movie, Hold That Blond, starring Veronica Lake & Alan Ladd. Leon & Betty were blessed with two sons, Mike & Kevin. Leon worked as a draftsman & architect for many years. He was a partner at Melander, Fugelso, Porter & Simich, and also Architects IV. He designed many buildings on the UMD campus, many area schools, banks, churches & government buildings. On paydays, Leon enjoyed taking his family to eat at local restaurants. Their favorites included Chinese Latern, Jolly Fisher, Zelda, Pickwick, London House, Bellows, Highland Supper Club, Zona Rosa & Le Grand. In the 1990's, Leon & Betty were snowbirds in Tucson. They frequently spent time with Jerry & Valorie (sister) Dahl. Life at Quail Ridge Estates was comfortable & enjoyable. Leon loved going to the cabin on Hanging Horn Lake in Barnum, MN. He relished working on projects with his son Mike; playing horseshoes with his father, brother (Lloyd) & sons; eating Betty's hot dishes, pasta salads & apple bars; & having a beer at bonfire each night surrounded by family. Leon took great pride in his grandchildren: Kristy, Chad & Lena. He admired their talent, work ethic & dedication to the family. He thought his daughter-in-law, Vicki, was a tremendous Mom & Grandmother. His loyal & beloved baby brother' Lloyd was always close to his heart. Leon's family extends its thanks & gratitude to the staff of Arbor Rose at Diamond Willow In Proctor; they repeatedly exhibited compassion, thoughtfulness and consideration towards Leon. Visitation will be from 9-10am, followed by the service at 10am, Thursday, December 28th 2017. Events are at 4100 Grand Ave W. Duluth - First Memorial Funeral Chapel.
