Obituary of Marlis Virginia Windus

Marlis Virginia Windus (East), 93, of Duluth, passed away on Thursday, December 28, 2017 at Marywood Assisted Living. Marlis was born on September 4, 1924 in Lake Benton, Minnesota and moved to Duluth at a young age. She attended and graduated from Denfeld High School, the University of Minnesota and the New England Music Conservatory. Marlis was an accomplished violinist and long-time member of the Cedar Rapids Symphony in Iowa where she played for over 50 years. She had a profound influence on many young musicians in the Cedar Rapids community through her teaching, both publicly and privately. Marlis loved to travel with family and friends and pursue her creative passions such as photography, gardening, crafts and painting. She was a member of PEO, AAUW, the Beethoven Club and Sons of Norway of Cedar Rapids. She is preceded in death by her husband William Albert Windus. Marlis is survived by son, David (Debbie) Windus of St. Louis, MO; daughter Joan (Jim) Halquist of Duluth, MN; two grandchildren, Peter (Katie Asher) Halquist of Ann Arbor, MI and Jonathan Halquist of Minneapolis, MN. The family would like to extend their heartfelt appreciation to the staff at Marywood for the care they provided Marlis during her stay. A memorial service will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday, January 2, 2017 at the Benedictine Chapel 935 Kenwood Ave. Duluth, MN. A gathering with refreshments will immediately follow the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Beethoven Club Music Awards or Orchestra Iowa, formerly known as the Cedar Rapids Symphony. Cremation Society of Minnesota 218-624-5200
