Jerome Young

Obituary of Jerome Thomas Young

On Tuesday, May 31, 2022, Jerome (Jake) Thomas Young, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at the age of 66. Jake was born on September 7, 1955 in St. Paul, MN to Jerome and Rosemary Young. After graduating from high school Jake started working with the Soo Line Railroad and worked there for 10 years.  He then went on to trade school and started working servicing Ingersoll Rand air compressors until his cancer diagnosis in May of 2021.

Jake met Rhonda Peterson from Mora, MN, in 1984 and they were married in 1990. They purchased their property in Sturgeon Lake in 1991 from Jake’s parents and spent many weekends tilling and cleaning the old farmstead land to make it into Jake’s paradise.  They built their home in 1999 and officially moved to Sturgeon Lake, along with the help of their four boys, Luke, Travis, Abe and Matt.

Jake had many things that he enjoyed. Some of his favorites included hunting and fishing on the local lakes, and spending time with his family at the cabin. Jake was also an avid gardener and he had beautiful gardens at their home in St. Paul and which was extended to their home in Sturgeon Lake.  This led to their taking over the neighboring greenhouse and together they owned and ran Young’s Greenhouse in Sturgeon Lake for over 20 years. Jake always put his family and friends first. He made sure everyone felt welcome and had what they needed. He could fix anything even if it just needed a little duct tape. He was known for his infectious smile, caring heart, collecting a thing or two from everyone, for always offering a helping hand to anyone and for always whistling.  If you heard whistling around you, you always knew Jake was nearby.

Jake was preceded in death by his father, Jerome, his mother, Rosemary, his brother Johnny, and his nephew Andy.  He is survived by his wife, Rhonda, their four sons, Luke (Dannielle), Travis (Alicia), Abe (Kendra), and Matt (Rebecca), his grandchildren Alayah, Klayton, Kenzie, Kelsie, Evaiah, Wesley and Sabriel; his brothers, Tim(Dalyce), Dan(Christine), Tony(Ann), Joe(Diane), and Chris(Cheryl), his sisters, Mary(Mike), Sue(Jim), Claire(Tom), and Beth(Greg), and many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.

The family will be having a Celebration of Life on August 6, 2022, starting at 3:00p.m., at their home in Sturgeon Lake.
