Obituary of Derry Owen Gilberg
Derry Owen Gilberg of Duluth, MN passed away on May 26, 2022 at the age of 91. Derry was born on January 27, 1931 in Duluth, MN to Marcus and Oma Gilberg. He enlisted in the United States Navy Reserve in 1947 before graduating from Denfeld High School in 1948. He worked as a Machinist at the Northern Pacific Railroad in Duluth until he was activated and deployed to Key West, FL during the Korean War to Submerine Squadran 4, and served as a Repair Machinist until 1954. Derry was married to Beryl (Aaberg) on June 7, 1952. They raised their three sons in Duluth. He started working for the Duluth Police Department in 1958 and served the city of Duluth for 27 years before retiring.
Derry had a green thumb and found joy taking care of his many flower beds, He was a proud member of many Duluth community organizations, and He enjoyed spending his winters in Key West after retirement. The most important thing to Derry was his family.
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife, and son, John. He is survived by his sons David and Tim, grandchildren Cassie (Derak) Gergen and Jesse (Sadie) Gilberg, and great granddaughters Nora Gergen and Brinley Gilberg.
A celebration of life will be held for Derry on Monday, June 6, at the Hillside Methodist Church in Duluth. Visitation will be at 10:00 a.m., the church service at 11:00 a.m., followed by lunch served in the church fellowship hall.
