Omps, Madge M.

February 20, 1935 – April 25, 2022

On Monday, April 25, 2022, Madge Marie Omps née Nazelrod, loving wife and mother of five, passed away in Woodbury, MN at the age of 87 after a 12-year battle with Alzheimer’s.

Madge was born on February 20, 1935 to Dwight and Celia (Kimble) Nazelrod in Coalton West Virginia where she spent her early years before moving to Elkins, WV at age 14 to live with her sister Beulah. At 17 she met John Omps, a young Davis and Elkins college student, at a Halloween party. Six weeks later Madge and John married.

Madge took pride in being a homemaker and raising their five children. As John’s career grew the couple lived in 19 different states. In 1972 Madge and John moved to Minnesota. With the youngest child in school, Madge began expanding her interests and became active in the League of Women Voters, eventually taking a staff position with Congressman Tom Hagedorn in his local office.

Madge was an avid tennis player and enjoyed golf, eventually moving full time with John to the golf community in Arizona where she could pursue her athletic interests year-round. After Madge’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2010 the couple moved back to Minnesota to be near family including their son and three daughters.

Madge is survived by her husband John and daughters Libby (Dennis Strong), Kathy (Mark Reps), Barb (Tom Greer), Lisa (James Woodley), and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Preceding Madge in death is her son John A. and grandson Skylar. Those wishing to honor Madge’s memory may donate to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America.
