Obituary of Mavis Jeanine Fowler

Mavis Jeanine (Kottom) Fowler passed away on April 1 at the age of 87 with her loving husband at her side and in the caring hands of Auburn Manor and Ridgeview hospice.

She was born March 30, 1935 in Sacred Heart, Minnesota. In the early 1940s, her family moved to Minneapolis to 1st Ave, then to DuPont Avenue. She graduated from Minneapolis Vocational High School in 1952. Mavis married Richard Fowler November 27, 1953 in Minneapolis.

After moving several more times, they settled in Shakopee where Mavis worked at St. Francis hospital, and later became the proofreader for the Shakopee Valley News, from which she retired. Mavis enjoyed sailing on their boat in Lake Superior often hosting family and friends, as well as taking trips to the Apostle Islands, Isle Royal and Michigan.

Her lifelong love of animals continued at the Manor—she had three “pets,” a stuffed tiger, a mechanical cat and a mechanical dog. She most loved the visits from Gunner, Steve & Lois’ German Shepard.

She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph and Minnie (Bodell) Kottom and her brother-in-law David Stiller. She is survived by her husband, Richard of Chaska; her 3 children Mikey (Kathy Vesely) of Golden Valley, Steve (Lois) of Waconia and Patti of Shakopee; siblings Sharon Stiller of Zumrota and Bruce (Carol) Kottom of Buffalo; and many other loving family and friends.

A memorial service will be held April 16 at 1:00 p.m. at Fairview Covenant Church, 1175 County Rd 19, Minnetrista, MN. Additional parking is available across the road. A life celebration with family and friends will begin at noon, and a light reception will follow.

She will be interred at Fort Snelling Cemetery at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Diabetes Association or the Dementia Society of America.
