Yesterday at the service I did not have the courage to stand up and speak. Even as I write this, I can't keep my composure and the tears won't stop. But there is so much that was left unsaid and I owe it to Nick to share my memories of the kind of man he was.
For those who don't know me, I'm Nick's ex wife. Our relationship didn't end because we didn't love each other. Even though, we ended on bad terms we forgave each other for the mistakes made long ago.
Nick and I met in 2006, we worked together as mail carriers and being two of the only 20 somethings working there, we quickly became friends. We'd often eat lunch together, a tradition we continued our entire relationship. (Picture of us on a lunch date 2013)
In December of 2007 Nick and I were out for a night and had a little too much to drink.....He made his move and I fell hard. He went from being my bestfriend to the love of my life.
We use to say, when you know, you know! And we were married a short 6 months later on June 23, 2008. We were so in love! We were late to our own wedding, we missed the exit we were supposed to take because we were holding hands staring in each others eyes.... yep that cheesy.
Our 1 month anniversary, he showed up to work on his day off with a huge bouquet of flowers. The guys all teased him that he was setting the bar awfully high.
He was such a romantic loving guy, he had no problem topping this. He was always an absolute gentleman. On our date nights, he was the type of guy who would pull the car around the house to the front door to pick me up. The week before our daughter was born, he surprised me daily with flowers. Daisy was born in November of 2009.
As good of a husband he was, he was an even better father. After a 10 hour day at work, he'd still take the kids to the park, no matter the seasons. Playing catch in the summer or snowboarding and sledding in the winter.
Playing catch with Nick, you'd have to remind him to throw softly. He had such an arm, my hand would sting like I wasn't even wearing a glove. I had to start using a catcher's mit.
We loved being outside. Camping, fishing, hiking, ect. We regularly had bonfires at home, singing silly songs and roasting marshmallows. He made life so much fun!
We also loved video games. When we first started dating, we loved Guitar Hero, so much that "our song" was one we played on there, Talk Dirty to Me.
Our love for video games continued as a family. There was a Pokemon game we got for Ian one Christmas, we would sneak and play even when Ian was at school. And then there was Mario Kart.... Nick was the king at Mario Kart.
One family night playing, Nick was in last place and Ian in first. We were on the last lap and Ian bet Nick $100 he couldn't possibly beat him. Nick won and he made Ian keep his word on his bet. Ian had to do quite a few dog poop pickups to pay off his bet.
Nick was an extremely hard worker and he wanted to instill that in his son. There's no doubt how proud of a dad he was. Those kids were everything to him!
I could literally go on forever telling stories about Nick.
It's through these memories I will keep him alive. Everytime I look at his children, I will see him. As I look back on all the years, I was truly blessed to love and be loved by him. He will always be one of the best people I've ever known and I will carry him in my heart forever.

To my nephew, our fond memories lie within the photos and updates that your mom has shared over the years. I wish we could have spent more time together but geography has been an obstacle. Your memory lives on in those beautiful children of yours whom I hope to meet in person soon. Your soul lives on in peace with God, family, and friends. Much love, Uncle Mike and Niki.
