Bergliot Schevenius

Obituary of Bergliot Marie Schevenius

Bergliot Marie Schevenius was born August 12, 1917 in Minneapolis while her mother was vacationing there. At the time her parents, Rev Carl and Alice Schevenius were living in Chicago where her father was a District Superintendent for the Methodist Church. They later moved to Minneapolis where Carl pastored Asbury United Methodist Church. Bergliot graduated from Central HS and attended the University of MN briefly before taking a position in the accounting department at Western Electric. Bergliot later took a position with AD Kleinman Realty and Property Management.

In 1973, Bergliot earned a BS in accounting from Metropolitan State University. The rest of her professional career was with the MN Department of Revenue in the field of tax revenue. She was the first woman allowed to audit outside the office. Shortly before her retirement she managed the Brooklyn Center Department of Revenue. Bergliot also did work as a public accountant. She enjoyed her clients but they became her friends and she did not like to charge them for her services. She liked helping seniors with challenging financial problems.

Photography and travel were two of Bergliot’s hobbies. She took many driving trips to national parks out west and to Alaska. She made several trips to Europe, with Norway as a favorite destination, and visited her brother John and his family in Africa where they were serving as missionaries. She always had a friend or two join her on these excursions. Bergliot was a past president of the Women’s Color Photo Club and one of the founding incorporators of the Twin Cities Area Council of Camera Clubs. She earned awards at International Photographic Exhibitions.

In 2001 Bergliot moved to Covenant Living of Golden Valley. She kept busy doing genealogical research and writing books about the family history, including a Memoir based on interviews with her father. Still mentally sharp after age 100 Bergliot enjoyed time spent with family and friends. She was always interested in others and had an amazing memory. With failing eyesight and hearing, Bergliot was finally slowing down after she turned 103. Bergliot passed away on December 10, 2021 at the age of 104. She will be missed by all who knew her.

Bergliot is survived by her sister-in-law, Ruth Schevenius, nephews Wesley and David (Susan), nieces Jean Fellman, Ann (Steve) Copeland, and Elizabeth (Kirk) Dykema, 11 great nieces/nephews and 5 great-great nephews.
