Phil Lived in St. Paul throughout his childhood and into his early adult years, attending Harding High School, where he excelled at baseball and loved choir. He would frequently be heard singing on road trips, while “fixing” in his workshop, and maintaining order among his 8 children at church. “On Top of Old Smokey” was a traveling favorite and “When Irish Eyes are Smiling”, which delighted his Irish mother.
Persuaded to join friends on a blind date, Phil was matched with Jane Ann Fish who
quickly became the love of his life, and they were married on June 21,1952 at the
advanced age of 19. This past June, they celebrated their 69 th anniversary. Prior to his
marriage, Phil was attending the U. of MN School of Electrical Engineering. Eleven
months after the wedding, he found himself the new father of a son and accepted his
first job in the emerging field of printed circuits with Nu-line Industries.
Following the birth of child number four, Timothy Roland, Phil and Jane moved their
family to Brooklyn Center, where all eight children were raised and sent off into the
world from Quail Ave. N. This home also served as a primary party hub for family
and friends. Their children could be frequently found sneaking out of bed and huddling
around the basement stairs to listen and get a glimpse of truly amazing parties!
Occasionally, one of Phil and Jane’s friends would “find their way” up the stairs to
entertain the children with wonderful stories and advice. Later, it was Phil and Jane
enjoying those similar encounters and the exciting parties, often spontaneous, hosted
by their children. In this home their children learned to play ball, change brake shoes (in
sub 0 weather), build officiating stands, and change diapers, many diapers. As a result,
the wash machine was in frequent need of repair, a skill he acquired from his father
Theodore Roland Juaire. All these workshop skills were needed raising 8 children. His
grandchildren would often say, “Give it to Grandpa, he can fix anything.”
Phil’s professional career took an unusual turn when he was hired to manage the
manufacturing of outdoor toilets at Satellite Industries. This adventure culminated with
Phil designing and patenting the first outdoor plastic portable toilet and many
“accessories”. During his life’s journey, parties, dancing, ballgames, social events,
family gatherings, officiating baseball, softball, football and volleyball, and later travel
provided great joy.
