Eugene Lundberg

Obituary of Eugene Wilhelm Lundberg

Eugene Wilhelm Lundberg passed away on Friday, September 17, 2021, after a brief battle with cancer. He was 84. He will be always remembered as a man of integrity in everything he did.

Gene was born on June 26, 1937 and grew up on a farm outside Ivanhoe, Minnesota. He received a Bachelor’s of Science in Mathematics Education from Winona State University and a Master’s of Science from Southeast University (Durant, OK).

Gene loved sports. As a high school and college athlete he participated in football, basketball, wrestling, track and field, baseball and softball. As a college football player he was required to play both offense and defense. As a track and field athlete he was the first WSU Warrior to participate in the javelin event. And his first ever exposure to wrestling happened in college, but quickly became one of his favorite sports.

Following college Gene took a teaching and coaching position at St. Paul Park High School. He worked with the District for over 30 years. He married his college sweetheart, Donna, in 1960. They raised their three sons in St. Paul Park. In the late 70’s Gene and Donna took teaching positions in Cairo, Egypt for two years. This was a hallmark of the Lundberg family.

In retirement Gene loved taking care of his lawn, his flowers and working at the golf course. He and Donna spent winters as snow birds down south golfing and relaxing. They also travelled extensively.

Gene was preceded in his death by his parents E.A and Mabel Lundberg, his wife Donna, and his brother Allan. He is survived by his brothers Quentin (Edna) and Kendall (Treava), sisters Anita (Frank) and Sharon (Ronnie), sons Scott (Marleen), Todd (Julie), Ted (Janna), grandchildren, Thomas, Andrew, Heidi, William, Taylor, Heather, Trevor, Jake, Zac, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral service will be at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 7000 Hinton Ave. S., Cottage Grove, MN, on Saturday, September 25, 2021, at 11 am. A visitation before the service will begin at 10 am. The family will be there to welcome friends and relatives.

In lieu of memorials Gene’s sons ask that you love your families.
