Obituary of Gosta W. Johnson

Gosta W. Johnson (Gus), a resident of White Bear Lake, Minnesota, died at the age of 99. Born in Falkenberg, Sweden, he immigrated with his parents at the age of two through Ellis Island, New York. Residing in Connecticut for most of his life, he retired and moved with his wife, Dorothy, to Minnesota in 1993 to be closer to family.

Gus served in the military during World War II and was a member of the 865th Air Engineer Squadron in the U.S. Air Force. Stationed in England, he repaired and worked on downed aircrafts before participating in the latter part of the Normandy invasion and being assigned additional duties operating an airfield in France, Belgium, and Germany.

After his return from the War, he met and married his wife, Dorothy M. Blake, who predeceased him at the age of 94 after 67 years of marriage. Gus worked his entire career for Factory Insurance Association (today part of Swiss Re) in Hartford, Connecticut. He initially worked as a draftsman and then a loss control engineer which involved inspecting large factories.

Gus is survived by his son, Kurt (Jeanne) who resides in Naples, FL, his daughter, Suzanne (Alice Vuocolo) who resides in Bernardsville, NJ and grandchild, Kristen (Sydney Meyer) who resides in Minneapolis, along with many relatives in Sweden. A conscientious hard-working individual who could be extremely funny and entertaining, he will be missed greatly by friends and family.

An inurnment service is to be scheduled later this summer at the Columbarium, St. Andrews Lutheran Church, 900 Stillwater Rd, Mahtomedi, MN. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to donor's choice.
