Obituary of Melvin Gene Schlatter
Melvin Gene Schlatter, age 91, of Silver Bay, Minnesota, passed from this earth on November 24, 2020, and was reunited with the love of his life. Preceded in death by his wife Irene (Bjerke) Schlatter; parents Eugene and Viola Schlatter; baby sister Evelyn Schlatter, brother Edwin Schlatter. Survived by his brother Leonard Schlatter (Carolyn Rougeaux), sister-in-law Rochelle Schlatter; children Raymond Schlatter (Peggy), Brenda Carlson, and Bradley Schlatter (Linda); 11 grandchildren; many great grandchildren; cousins, nieces and nephews.
Mel was born April 17, 1929 in Chicago, Illinois where he was raised, and graduated from Lane Technical School. He served in the US Army for three years during the Korean War. Mel and Irene were married in 1950 and they built their life together in Silver Bay, raising a family and enjoying many friendships. He made a career as a Millwright at Reserve Mining Company. A talented mechanic, craftsman, and carpenter, he had a keen eye for detail and valued precision in his work. Mel always enjoyed a good conversation and was an excellent adviser. He was also a lifelong enthusiast of shooting sports, hunting and fishing. Active in the local sportsmen’s club for many years, he especially enjoyed trap shooting.
Mel took pride in a job well done, and he left this world on his own terms, with scales balanced, and everything “square with the world.”
A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at the Cremation Society Funeral Home in Edina, MN on June 19, 2021 at 2:00pm, with visitation beginning at 1:00, followed by a light lunch and fellowship with family and friends.
A burial ceremony will be held at 3pm, July 3, 2021 at the Sawtooth Mountain Cemetery in Silver Bay.
