Mitch Stewart

Obituary of Mitch Stewart

Mitch Stewart, passed away May 4, 2021 in Duluth, Minnesota.  Mitch was born June 28, 1958 to Jack and Joan Stewart.  He was raised in the Homecroft Community and has four brothers and one sister.  Mitch attended Homecroft, Washington and Central Schools.  When Mitch was 17 years old he attended The Piney Point Seamanship School.  Mitch sailed The Great Lakes. His first ocean going trip was to Egypt, at The Rock of Gibraltar.  Another ocean freighter ship rammed into the ship he was on; the ship Mitch was on sank and seven young men drowned.  Mitch was saved by The English Coast Guard and was brought to Madrid.  Mitch had Survival “Guilt” for the rest of his life…he was never the same after that.  After Mitch returned to Duluth he worked with cement and he did very good with this.  Mitch was always willing to help other people.  Along the way Mitch became a great cook and he loved doing this.  He always made large meals for family and friends throughout the years.

Mitch was preceded in death by his grandparents; father, Jack Stewart; brother, Mike Stewart; one sister, Carla Stewart Herman; two aunts, Jeanny Salgy and Marlene Warren; two nephews, Mathew Stewart and Dru; and two cousins, Pat and Shawn Murphy.

He is survived by his five children, Nicky, Olivia, Josh, Jessica and Tony; six grandchildren; mother, Joan Stewart; brother, Wade (Colleen), Scott (Will), Loren (Brenda); cousins, nieces, nephews; extended family and many, many friends.

Mitch has been welcomed into Heaven by his brother, his sister and good friends, Paul and Swede.  Mitch loved and was loved by all of us and we miss him already.  His suffering and pain is over and his presence is missed.  He sends his love to “Dino, Donnie and Dana” and his many neighbors who helped him stay in his home the last two years and friends who also helped.  Thank You!

A Celebration of Life will be held later this summer.  Arrangements by the Cremation Society of Minnesota Duluth.
