Obituary of Jay Edward Digle

Jay Edward Digle, 90, a lifetime resident of Duluth, died February 5th, 2021 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s.

Jay was born on July 21st, 1930 to Edward F Digle and Stephanie (Johnson) Carlson.

He spent much of his childhood growing up on Park Point. He graduated from Duluth Central High School. He served honorably in the US Army while stationed in Germany during the early 1950’s.

Following his service, he returned to Duluth and began a successful 40 year career in automobile sales.

On February 14, 1959, he wedded Jean Eleanor Anderson and they raised five children together. They were happily married 52 years until her passing on May 24, 2011.

Jay had a passion for the outdoors and nature. He was happiest when taking the family on fishing trips in the BWCA and Ontario, spending time at the cabin on Whiteface Reservoir, sailing on Lake Superior, and making trips to the Apostle Islands.

In retirement, he loved to take his dogs for walks in Lester Park and enjoyed watching birds. He spent much of one summer raising a baby robin that had fallen from its nest.

Jay is survived by his four sons, Gregory Digle, Jeffrey Digle, James (Laurie) Whitlinger, Gerald (Patricia) Anderson, daughter Barbara (Whitlinger) Bayly, seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

A private family memorial will be held at a later date.
