Obituary of Maxine Anita Jimenez
Maxine Anita (Hammerberg) Jimenez, 95, died December 11, 2020. She was born in Crandon, WI April 27, 1925. She married Dr. Edward Jimenez on February 28, 1948 in Chicago, IL. Maxine graduated from The Columbia School of Nursing, Milwaukee WI, in 1948. Maxine and Edward raised seven children and were married 69 years until his death in 2017.
She and her family lived in Germany during Edward’s time in the army, Puerto Rico, and many US states. In 1972 Maxine and her family moved to Duluth, MN. She was active in organizations focusing on health and family issues, including volunteering for Planned Parenthood and teaching literacy to kindergarten through adult-aged students. She was an avid reader active in book clubs and an accomplished quilter, knitter, stitcher, and beader, who created beautiful artistic pieces. Maxine loved her family and having adventures. She treasured being at the family cabin throughout the year, canoeing the lake in spring and summer, enjoying the forest autumn colors, and cross-country skiing the way in during the winter. She canoed the Boundary Waters and traveled around the world. Maxine’s spirit was always strong and independent, yet she was generous, gracious, and grateful for her family and friends.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Edward, son Edward, grandson Pearce Allen, sister Holly (Hammerberg) Grace, and parents Knute and Irene Hammerberg.
She is survived by her children Nancy Jimenez, Janet Arenson, Yvonne (David) Mehring-Wheale, Michele Jimenez (Richard Appelbom), Ann (Bradford) Allen, and Michael (Ruth) Jimenez; grandchildren Anita Arenson, Clara and Iris Appelbom-Jimenez, Bryson and Trent Allen, and Aidan and Shewaye Jimenez; and sister Rosemary (Dale) Johnston.
Due to COVID-19 pandemic concerns, a private celebration of her life will be held at a later date.
