Bruce Ciskie, Sr.

Obituary of Bruce Theodore Ciskie, Sr.

Bruce Theodore (Ted) Ciskie, Sr., beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, died Sunday, December 12, 2020, at Essentia Health- St. Mary’s Medical Center in Duluth.

Bruce was born March 28, 1930, in Superior, WI. He served in the Korean War from 1950-53, part of the 728th Military Police Batallion. After returning to Superior, he began working as a longshoreman, a job he held until his injury-related retirement in the early 1990s. After retirement, he performed odd jobs and worked part-time, while also serving time on the Douglas County Board of Supervisors as the representative of the 11th district, a seat he traded back and forth with Lew Martin.

Along with bladder and prostate cancer, Bruce dealt with the long-term effects of frostbite suffered while he served in Korea. Those aftereffacts would cost him parts of toes on his left foot. He also survived multiple aneurysms and dementia before contracting COVID-19 recently, which his body ultimately could not fight off.

Bruce is survived by his loving wife of four decades, Georgia, who was his primary caregiver as he suffered from dementia for years prior to his death. He is also survived by his son, Bruce Jr. (Tammy) of Proctor; stepsons Robert (Colleen) Miller of Hermantown, Donald (Paula) Miller of Green Bay, Joseph Miller of Superior, and Patrick (Marcie) Miller of Superior; sister Joyce (Art) Rose; along with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even great-great-grandchildren.

The family wishes to thank the nurses on the COVID-19 floor at Essentia for their stellar care, not just of Bruce but of all others who they have crossed paths with during this awful pandemic. The family also wishes to thank the Department of Veterans Affairs for their continued care of Bruce, both through their medical facilities and home health care nurses.

Arrangements through Cremation Society of Minnesota. A memorial service will be held at a later date, once COVID-19 gathering restrictions are eased and it is safer to gather.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Shriners Hospitals for Children.
