Obituary of Raymond Matthew Lustig

Raymond Matthew Lustig, age 60, of Apple Valley MN passed away on October 11, 2020 due to Covid 19 and Alzheimer's. Ray, who had Down’s Syndrome, was born March 4,1960, the youngest of 6 children to Robert and Ruth Lustig of Crystal Lake IL.  He was preceded in death by his father and is survived by his mother and his siblings: Michael (Susan), Mary, Barbara, Mark, Peggy, a nephew and 4 great-nephews.

Pioneer Center in McHenry, Il provided an education for Raymond and he graduated at age 21 with a diploma. Ray’s outgoing personality, positive attitude and determination allowed him to realize his goals of working in the community and transitioning into an independent living program.

Ray worked full-time at Dominick’s grocery store in Crystal Lake for 10 years as a bagger. After moving to Minnesota in 2001 he worked at Byerly’s Foods as a bagger and at Cub Foods as part of the clean team.  As Ray’s Alzheimer’s progressed he switched to the Pro Act workshop.

Ray was very athletic, and sports were a big part of his life. He played basketball and baseball; competed in Special Olympics swimming, diving and bowling; and achieved a black belt in Karate. Ray loved the Chicago Cubs, “Da Bears”, the WWF wrestling, TV sitcoms, dancing and 70’s pop music. Raymond was an eager traveler and a seasoned camper and visited many parts of the USA with his family.

Special thanks to the New Challenges staff who helped Ray to live more independently in his apartment and then supported him as his health declined.  Ray is loved and missed by both family and friends. Due to Covid 19 we are unable to have a celebration of his life at this time. Memorials preferred to River Valley Project Explore (Apple Valley, MN), Pioneer Center (McHenry, IL) or to the Special Olympics Organization.
