Obituary of William Robert Van Sloun

Van Sloun, William Robert "Bill" passed away peacefully November 8, 2020, at St. Gertrude's Health and Rehab in Shakopee, Minnesota, weeks short of his 90th birthday. Bill was born November 12, 1930 to Florian Van Sloun and Esther (Diethelm) Van Sloun, one of thirteen children. He attended St. John's University majoring in physics. After his service in the army, he began his career with General Motors because it afforded him the opportunity to work in electronics and travel the world. He spent several years in Italy before returning to the US and living in southern California, where he later took positions with Douglas Aircraft and then General Dynamics. His thirst for knowledge continued and he studied medicine at St. Cloud State, Guadalajara, Mexico, and NSU in Buffalo, NY, serving his residency with the VA. His career path had him serving temporary assignments at private hospitals throughout the upper Midwest, retiring in 2000 at age seventy. Gardening became a passion for him. Winters found him poring over seed catalogs and summers were spent in his garden and orchard. Many friends and family were recipients of his bountiful harvests. He was preceded in death by his parents, Florian and Esther, and siblings George, Grace, Joyce, Joan, Jane, Giles, Robert, Leo, and Louis, He is survived by his brother, Mark, and sisters Madge (Harry) Olson and Molly (Gene) Loberg, as well as many nieces and nephews.
