Obituary of Anthony J. Abbott

Tony passed away on October 10, 2020. He was born to Thomas and Antoinette Abbott on June 26, 1927 in the village of Oliver, WI, but had been a Duluth resident nearly all his life.

Upon receiving his diploma from Morgan Park High School in 1944, he served his country in the Pacific Theater as a member of the United States Navy, and became one of the approximately 16 million Americans who served during World War II. After his military service, he met the love of his life, Elizabeth Marnich, and they were married 66 years until her death in 2014. He was a bricklayer for United States Steel for a time, and spent the majority of his working career employed by the City of Duluth Water and Gas Department as a serviceman and dispatcher, retiring in 1986.

Tony loved the outdoors and was an avid fisherman. He also loved baseball as both a player and a fan. He was one of the better left-handed pitchers in the area, playing on the Oliver AC and Gary AC teams. He would go on to follow baseball for the rest of his life. After his retirement, Tony became a familiar site to many on the roads and trails throughout the western communities of Duluth, either on foot or riding his bike. He will be deeply missed by family and friends.

His parents precede him in death, along with his wife Elizabeth ‘Bess’ Abbott, sisters Anna, Geraldine, and Yolanda, and in June of this year, a daughter-in-law, Pamela (Bloom) Abbott.

He is survived by his brother Frank Abbott, Oliver WI, along with his three children Claudia (Patrick) Hayden, Duluth, Mark (Wendy) Abbott, Phoenix, AZ, and Anthony Abbott, Jr., Carlton. Tony is also survived by a granddaughter and three grandsons. There are no plans for a service at this time.
