Carol Ylitalo

Obituary of Carol Lynn Ylitalo

Carol Lynn Ylitalo, 66, of Duluth, passed away peacefully with her husband by her side on September 20, 2020 after a courageous battle with mesothelioma. She was born on November 6, 1953 to Janice and James Peterson. She graduated from Central High School in 1972. After graduation she began work as a nurse’s aide, but soon changed professions and embarked on a career in banking. She started as a teller, progressed through the ranks, and retired as an Assistant Vice President at Wells Fargo Bank.

Carol was united in marriage to James Ylitalo on May 22, 1981, and they enjoyed 39 years of marriage.

Carol is survived by her loving husband, Jim, and two children, Scott (Joy) Peterson and Jonathan Ylitalo (Khrystin Ockuly); grandchildren Scott Jr., Dan, and Kennedy Peterson; brothers Jim (Sabine) Peterson and Bill Peterson; sisters Connie (Steve) Gowers and Judy (Jim) Salo. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews, and her golden retriever, Gunnar.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Jim and Jan Peterson, and her sister Nancy Rae Radimecky.  Carol’s family was always so important to her and she treasured the relationship she had with each and every member, near and far. She was the spark of her family and enjoyed hosting holiday dinners for her extended family and friends. She wholeheartedly supported each one in all of their endeavors. She was a football mom to Scott during his high school years, and a soccer and hockey mom to Jon from his mini-mite days through high school.

The family would like to express a special thank you to her nephew, Dr. Jason Kent, and niece, Dr. Elizabeth Kent, for helping Carol and for helping the family better understand this dreaded disease. Our thanks to Dr. Daniel Nikcevich for his care, and the Solvay Hospice House for providing Carol with comfort during her final days. Also, Carol’s family would like to thank everyone for the outpouring of support from family and friends during this difficult time. Your support is so very appreciated.
