Obituary of Joanne Lindsay

Joanne Barbara Lindsay passed away September 2, 2020. She was born February 2, 1933 to Florence and Arthur Oman in Two Harbors, MN. She grew up in Minneapolis and Two Harbors and graduated from Two Harbors High School in 1950.

After graduation Joanne moved to Minneapolis and then to Cloquet with first husband Wayne Smith. They had three children Rick, Terri and Rachel. In 1960 Wayne passed away. In 1963 Joanne married James Lindsay. and had  children Diane and Heather. They lived in Cloquet and then moved to the Iron Range in 1972 where they enjoyed many years living on the lake.

Joanne was the kindest and most loving person you could ever meet. She loved her family and friends and enjoyed spending time with them all. She would cook for people, make baked goods, sew, and quilt. She made the best wild rice soup, raspberry jam, and has the family famous chocolate cake recipe. She enjoyed needlecrafts of all sorts. She loved to play games was great at cards and had a competitive streak. She would do the crossword puzzle daily in ink, and always had a good book to read.

After retiring from the Biwabik school library, Joanne and Jim would spend their winters in Port Charlotte and Punta Gorda Florida. They enjoyed going on cruises, going to dinner with friends and being part of the Thursday group. They spent summers at UMD in  senior housing and enjoyed all of the friends made there. She enjoyed the Two Harbors class of 1950 luncheons each month and looked forward to seeing friends. Joanne loved to connect with family near and far. Later Joanne and Jim moved to Panama City to be near daughter Diane where Joanne enjoyed attending book club, playing bridge at the senior center and spending time with family.

Joanne is survived by her husband Jim, sister Arlene(Doug) Covert, daughters Terri (Don) LeBrasseur, Diane (Jerry) Heikkinen, and Heather (Angelo) Velazquez. Also her grandchildren Derek, Dallas, Lyn, Ann, Randy, Mike, Sarah, Tom, Amy, Elizabeth and Jennifer and 17 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband Wayne, son Rick, daughter Rachel and sister Patty. Joanne’s legacy will live on in all the lives she touched, and her example of kindness will be remembered.

Internment will be at the Biwabik Township Cemetery and a celebration of life will be held at a later date.
