Jonathon Dahl

Obituary of Jonathon Karl Dahl

Jonathon K. Dahl, 66, of Duluth died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loved ones on Wednesday, August 19, 2020 following a year long battle with cancer.

Jon was born October 11, 1953 in Duluth, MN to Donald Dahl and Eda (Macor) Dahl. He was a 1972 graduate of Proctor High School and attended college at the University of Minnesota Duluth. As a young man, Jon served in the United States Army in Fort Hood, TX from 1974-1976 where he learned to operate heavy equipment. Jon retired from the St. Louis County Highway Department in 2015 after 34 years. He took his responsibility to keep the roads safe for the citizens of St. Louis County as a snowplow driver seriously and never missed a call-out after a storm. During the summers he was known as Captain Jon Dahl aboard the Happy Hooker out of Canal Park in Duluth where he shared his passion for fishing on the beautiful Lake Superior with family, friends, and charter fishing customers. Taking over their father Don’s charter fishing business in 1986, Jon and his brother Peter continued the family legacy of becoming career fishermen and today the Hooker fleet has grown from one to six charter boats. If you asked Jon what he did on vacation or when he wasn’t charter fishing, he would say “fishing” of course! Isle Royale, Costa Rica, Alaska and the lakes and rivers in Canada were some of his favorite adventures. Along with fishing Jon was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting as much as fishing.

Jon was preceded in death by Don Dahl (father), Eda Dahl (mother), Susan (Dahl) Running (sister) and his beloved son Jon (Jonny) Dahl.

He is survived by his wife Karen, son Peter Dahl, daughter Angel (Dan) Wood, brother Peter (Sue) Dahl, sister Kristine (Greg) Kaake, granddaughters Lilianna and Layla, grandson John and countless nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Jon’s life is being planned for a future date when it is safer for friends and family to gather. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested donations can be made in memory of Captain Jon Dahl to help support the annual charter fishing adventures for disabled veterans that Jon proudly participated in each summer. Please make checks payable to MN Veterans Home: Rec Dept, and mail to MN Veterans Home, Attn: Joyce Scott, 56 Outer Drive, Silver Bay, MN 55614.
