Marie McNiel

Obituary of Marie Lillian McNiel

Marie Lillian McNiel passed away at 87 years old on June 3, 2020 after a courageous battle with pulmonary disease. She was born on October 26, 1932 to Lillian and Michael Mastrian In Minneapolis, Minnesota. She graduated from Washburn High School in 1950. In 1952, she was united in marriage to Jack McNiel and lived in Minneapolis, Illinois, and finally Fosston where they raised their 4 children. Marie was a very active member of Hope Lutheran Church, as well as in the community. She enjoyed cooking, golfing, bowling, gardening and volunteering. She cherished her time in Fosston and made friendships that lasted her lifetime. In 1980, Marie moved to Minneapolis, where she began her career at Lifetouch and called home for the rest of her life.

Marie’s greatest joy in life was her family. Many hours were spent at Granny’s pool swimming and eating treats. She was a very integral part in her families’ lives enjoying celebrations and time spent together and never passed an opportunity to spend time with her family. Marie was a lover of many things, an avid shoe shopper, a passion for food, a mystery novel reader, a fashionista, a believer in healthy living and, of course, she loved her day-time soap opera. Marie was known for her sense of humor, as well as her stubbornness, and was always ready for a new adventure. Anyone who was lucky enough to know Marie, will remember her as a selfless and welcoming individual.

Marie was preceded in death by her mother, father and daughter, Susan Sina. She is survived by her children: Shelley, Michael and Sara, 13 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She will be remembered as a kind, loving and generous mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend.

Interment will be at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Lengby at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Hope Lutheran Church Radio/TV fund. Arrangements are with Carlin Family Funeral Service of Fosston. A celebration of Marie’s life will be held when gathering restrictions are lifted.

“Granny” will be greatly missed by her family and everyone who had the privilege to meet her.
