Great obituary for a great man. He leaves quite a legacy. My condolences to the family. I knew the Tillotsons through First Presbyterian in Red Wing, MN, in the 1970s. Russ was a good, genuine pastor. As I recall, daughter Becky (same age as me) played hockey, in the same cohort that I was in. Russ, the story goes, encouraged hockey so she could learn how to skate while holding onto a hockey stick (therefore, less falling). Good, practical logic. I think Becky stuck with hockey long enough to meet that goal. But for a season or two, she was the only girl in organized hockey in Red Wing, which was kind of cool.

Russ was truly everyone's friend and pastor to all. I still carry a small inexpensive metal pocket cross he gave me 35+ years ago the first day I went with him as a Deacon to visit the sick and shut-ins. Yes, we visited anyone from Crivitz at the hospital and seemingly everyone without regulate visitors at the 3 nursing homes and a few private homes on the list that day. He gave each of them a pocket cross, too. Russ showed love and compassion to everyone he met. My 2-3 hour trip became an all day adventure. I learned not to gasp too loudly when Russ was shifting gears, turning a corner and cheerfully waving to anyone and everyone we met while driving down the road. Most of them waved or honked back. I am sure they are all smiling, waving and honking in Heaven to welcome him to his eternal home.

From my mother, Cooky Bergman. This is what she said when I asked about it....
He was the minister at the Presbyterian church in Crivitz. He was all that was written above and so much more. We met him many times while in Crivitz, and always ALWAYS began with a corney joke. He was much loved by everyone! A truly GOOD MAN.

Russ was one of the finest men I have ever known . He was also a Mason and embodied the very essence of Masonry-brotherly love, relief, and truth.
Russ truly regarded the entire human species as one
family under God.His church was the world whether they were religious or not, happy or hurting, reasonable or irrational . Russ loved them all as Christ taught us. He taught me how to treat others kindly and with respect even when they might annoy me.He also was an inspiration on how to make a differenceeven after your professional career is over.
Russ-thanks for all your advice and for the example you showed us. Well done, thou good and faithful servant.

My first memories of Rev. Tillotson were when I was little at basketball games - and I could always count on his beautiful whistling to entertain me. He always had a smile and kind words and taught me a lot about what being a decent person could look like. I was one of the people he married on the side of a river. I will be forever grateful to have known him. Love to family and friends.

The line about people smiling reading this obituary is so true. Pastor Tlllotson stopped to see me in the hospital after the birth of my second child. I was not a member of his church and had only met him in passing. He said he would stop at the hospital information desk and ask if anyone from the Crivitz area was hospitalized, and if so, he would stop, offer any help needed and offer a prayer. His kindness was much appreciated and remembered. I did indeed smile remembering him. My condolences on your loss.

My deepest sympathies on the loss of your father. He was a wonderful, caring man. I loved visiting your families home as Kathleen's friend and neighbor. Your family was the best! I remember being included in so many activities and the rides to Frontenac Beach often driven by your dad or mom. Love, hugs and prayers to you all. Debbie (Wipperling) Schloegel

We got to know Russ at First Congregational Church in Asheville. Soon after John and I moved here, he picked me up to hear Michelle Obama speak at UNC-Asheville. What a great time! As we got to know him better, we enjoyed his incredible stories about his amazing life. His passion for justice was inspiring. He often assisted us with a breakfast program for folks experiencing homelessness. When Syl was declining, he cared for her so tenderly. I am proud to have known him.
