Obituary of James E. Childs

James E Childs, 77 of Proctor, MN passed away peacefully March 26, 2020 surrounded by his wife Phyllis, daughter Maxine and son Robert. 

James (Jim) was born December 11, 1942 to Max and Gladys Childs in Duluth, MN. Jim grew up in the Duluth Heights and at 17 enlisted in the Navy. He served during the Vietnam War aboard the aircraft carrier USS Ticonderoga. In 1965 Jim married Phyllis, his wife of 54 years. 

Jim led a life actively involved in the lives of his family. He enjoyed dancing with Phyllis, coffee and projects with Maxine, hunting and fishing with Rob and family, riding his Harley and traveling on family vacations. Jim’s grandson Dan plus his many nephews and nieces held a special spot in his heart.

Jim enjoyed many sports. During his youth Jim was a Golden Gloves boxer. Jim coached and played hockey, enjoyed auto racing, earned a black belt in karate, fished locations from Canada to the Amazon plus hunting trips ranging from Newfoundland moose to Louisiana alligators. 

Jim had a passion for working with his hands and operating machinery. He especially enjoyed projects with family. Today his family has lasting memories of his passions as they look out upon the beautiful landscape of their yards and enjoy the warm security of the homes he helped them build. 

Jim is survived by his wife Phyllis; sisters Maxine Lear, Margaret (Earl) Edberg and Edie Childs; brothers Tom Childs, Chuck (Char) Childs and Glen (Cathy) Childs; his children, Robert (Joan) Childs, and Maxine Childs (Steve Netzel); grandson Dan Childs; and many nieces and nephews. Proceeding him in death were his parents Max and Gladys Childs, Eleanor Bice (sister), Sara Childs (sister) and Dan Childs (brother). 

Jim will be deeply missed by family and friends. Any memorials in honor of James Childs will be appreciated by Solvay Hospice House at 801 Baylis St. Duluth, MN 55811. Due to the current health concerns of the nation, there will be not be a public service until a later date.
