Obituary of David Allison Heiberg

Heiberg, David A. age 86, died peacefully on Dec. 17, 2019. Preceded in death by wife Verna, parents Emmett A. Heiberg, Sr., and Jo (Josephine) Heiberg, and brother Emmett A. Heiberg, Jr. Survived by daughters Laura Noble and Kristin Heiberg, son James Heiberg, grandson Andrew D. Noble, rescue cat Tina, and many dear friends. David was born and raised in Fergus Falls, MN. He served in the U.S. Navy as a Hospital Corpsman Third Class, stationed at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland, CA. Upon his return home, he worked at the Fergus Falls State Hospital, where he met student nurse Verna Agotness. They fell in love and were married for 59 years. Dave earned his Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Minnesota and was a member of the faculty. He spent his career as a licensed clinical psychologist with the Boynton Health Service where he was beloved by students and faculty who came to him for help. He also counseled at Hazelden in Center City, MN. Dave was a quiet man with a kind heart, artistic talent, and a wry sense of humor. He had many and varied interests, including travels through London, Paris, and Rome. He loved Renoir and Monet, Dickens and Thurber, poetry, baseball, great films such as "Singing in the Rain," and a wide range of music, from Beethoven to Benny Goodman to the Beatles. His love of animals and humans alike was reflected in years of volunteer work for two animal humane societies, the MN AIDS Project, and Meals on Wheels, which he continued well into his 80sbut Dave's greatest joy came from simply being a family man. At his request, there will be no public observances. Memorials preferred to Meals on Wheels and Feline Rescue, Inc.
