Obituary of Thomas Nick Turchi
Thomas Nick Turchi, 78, of Duluth, passed away at home on Saturday, December 14, 2019, following a brief battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born in Hibbing Minnesota to Dolores and Nick Turchi on May 29, 1941. The family moved to Gary-New Duluth in 1942 and then in 1948 to Morgan Park, a planned community that was an ideal place to raise children.
He attended St. Margaret Mary’s Catholic School through grade 8. He graduated from Morgan Park High School in 1959. He attended the University of Wisconsin, Superior and graduated in 1965 with majors in Geography and Geology. Tom went on and received a Masters in Education from UMD.
After college, he worked for the City of Duluth Engineers for several years, but found teaching to be his calling. His first teaching assignment was in Iron River for one year. As a teacher for the Duluth Public Schools, he taught at Lincoln, West, Woodland and Ordean Junior Highs, retiring in 1999. Tom and Jeannette were married for 37 years. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Jeannette, sons Thomas (Julie), Stephen (Dawn), Michael (Robyn), his daughter Kaye, his brother, Jim, his sister, Carol Bjorklund (Gregg), sister-in-law Carol Marie Ivey (John) and many nieces and nephews. He was blessed with 9 grandchildren: Jake, Tony, Tommy, Molly, Mazie, Kaitlyn, Allison, Nick, Tyler and his friend, Keith Engberg. He will be missed by his 3 standard poodles.
A Memorial Service will be held at Concordia Lutheran Church, 2501 Woodland Avenue on Saturday, December 21, 2019, at 11 AM.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be given to CHUM or the Damiano Center.
