Stephen Randel

Obituary of Stephen Christopher Randel

Stephen Christopher Randel passed away unexpectedly at age 50 on October 15, 2019 in Minneapolis, MN.  He was born October 26, 1968 in Houston, TX to John Thomas and Nancy (Orr) Randel.  He grew up in Tulsa, OK and graduated from Thomas A. Edison High School in 1987, where he was a gifted student and earned the ranking of Eagle Scout from the Boy Scouts of America.  He received his bachelor’s degree in Finance from Texas Christian University in 1991, where he was a member of the Delta Tau Delta fraternity and affectionately referred to as “Dooz” because of his role as Treasurer.

Stephen, a CFA, worked for over 17 years for RBC Wealth Management, formerly Dain Rauscher, as a financial executive providing superior support and expertise to clients in the areas of wealth management and fiduciary liability.  He was a gifted public speaker and storyteller who fulfilled a life-long dream by authoring two picaresque novels and one collection of short stories.  Stephen’s friends and family remember his intelligence, kindness, humor and quiet dignified manner.  His life accomplishments and adventures were reflective of his favorite quote, “Kites rise highest against the wind, not with it” by Winston Churchill.

Steve was passionate for his rescue dogs, exotic cooking, soccer (both coaching youth and cheering Queens Park Rangers) and international travel.  His love of the outdoors, as first cultivated by the Scouts, continued with his daily walks with his dogs along the Mississippi River.  In his spare time, he procured an extensive book collection and was a car enthusiast who pampered his Porsche 911, Audi A8 and Land Rover.

A beloved son, brother and uncle, Steve is survived by his parents, Tom Randel of Tulsa, OK and Nancy Randel of Asheville, NC; his sister and brother-in-law, Philippe and Amy Rosse of Asheville, NC, cherished niece and nephew, Eliza and Holden Rosse; sister Molly Randel of Oklahoma City, OK; and former wife, Jill Gaulden of Chapel Hill, NC.  His kindness and wit will be greatly missed by his aunts, uncle, cousin and network of friends, clients and colleagues.

Stephen’s cremated remains have been placed at Rose Hill Cemetery in Tyler, TX, in view of the memorials of numerous family members who have been buried there for over a century.  Donations in memory of Stephen may be made to the American Cancer Society at P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123 or to American Humane at 1400 16th Street NW, Suite 360, Washington, DC 20036.
