Obituary of Joanne M. (Petrey Christman) Carlson
Joanne M. (Petrey Christman) Carlson, age 81, of Duluth, formerly of Superior, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2019 in her home with loving family by her side after a brief illness.
She was born on July 13, 1938 in Superior, WI to Robert and Marion (Campshure) Petrey. Joanne was a graduate of Superior Central High School. In her later years after raising her children, she continued her education by attending classes at WITC and Lake Superior College.
Joanne was previously married to Joe Christman of Superior where they raised 5 children. She met and married the love of her life, Marv Carlson, in the early 1990’s, which included his 2 children.
In the 70’s she worked at Jeno’s Pizza in Superior. She later worked in the secretarial field in Duluth at Harcourt, Brace, and Jovanovich, Waste Management, and Johnson Carpet One.
Joanne had many hobbies but most of all loved attending events that included her grandchildren and enjoyed traveling with Marv. She was an avid Minnesota Vikings fan. “Go Vikings!”
Joanne is preceded in death by her parents, step-father Joseph Mikloczak, grandson Robert (Robbie) Christman, Jr., Uncle Bob and Aunt Zoa Campshure, sister-in-law Nancy Petrey, nephew Joe Petrey, brother-in-law Ron Carlson, father-in-law Gordon Carlson, and former husband, Joe Christman.
She is survived by her loving husband, Marv Carlson, children and grandchildren, Jeff (Nancy) Christman, Laura Christman (Jeremy, Adam, Joe, Lynda, Anna), Jackie (Jim) Runions (Chera, Cherene, Chaila), Rob (Maria) Christman (Steven and Morgan), Julie Christman, Christine Carlson, and Patrick (Unsuk) Carlson. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren and her siblings Bud Petrey, Judy Mikloczak, Kathy (Ray) Jones, and Diane Tomczak.
The family would like to thank St. Luke’s Hospice nurses, Donna and Becky, for the wonderful care of Joanne. She was a brave, strong woman throughout her brief illness and never complained.
In lieu of flowers, please consider sending donations in Joanne’s name to the Minnesota Ovarian Cancer Alliance (MOCA).
Visitation will begin at 2 pm with celebration of life beginning at 3 pm Friday, Nov. 8th at the Cremation Society of Minnesota, 4100 Grand Avenue, Duluth, MN.
