I had the great pleasure of working with Bill for three of the earliest, and most memorable, years of my DNR career. I believe the time spent in the Tower District with Bill and Howard Wagoner--tramping access roads on snowshoes, chasing after fires, checking leases on Lake Vermilion in a boat that quite often lost power and left us adrift, and being educated at the coffee counter (a nickel a cup) in Martilla Drug--was the most magnificent training a young forester could hope to experience.
Bill had a wonderful collection of colorful expressions. Some confound me to this day, but I happily repeat them nonetheless. Thanks for your patience Bill. Rest in Peace.
