Obituary of Peter Ray Moore

Age 57, of Brooklyn Park, passed away unexpectedly at home on August 15, 2019. Preceded in death by Mother, Genevieve; nephew, Brian Moore; in-laws Maurice and Doris Rubsam. Survived by wife, Shawn; daughters, Alison (Kevin) Lieder, McKinley, Madison; grandchildren, Dylan and Morgan Lieder; father, Merlin; siblings, Denny (Deb), Carolyn (Jim) Ploof, Tom (Cindy Johnson), Curt (Pat); brothers-in-law Stacy (Betsy Draxten) and Scott Rubsam; beloved niece Christine (Hugo) Tamez & nephews Scott (Megan); Quentin (Bryn) and Tucker (Chris Damian) Moore and Peter and Scott Rubsam as well as extended family and friends.

Pete grew up in Silver Bay, Minnesota, and graduated from college at St. Cloud State University with degrees in communication and business. Early in his career, he was a successful salesman and sales manager. Pete met his wife, Shawn, while working at Deluxe Corporation. Pete and Shawn married in 1991 and made their home in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. Pete was a stay-at-home dad for several years, raising McKinley and Madison when they were young. During that time, he completed his teaching degree through Bemidji State University. Pete taught at Sand Creek, Oxbow Creek, and Hamilton Elementary schools in the Anoka Hennepin School District. Being a teacher was Pete’s true calling.

Pete, Shawn, and the girls loved to travel and took trips to England, Scotland, Wales, France, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Spain, Hungary, the Czech Republic, Austria, Puerto Rico, Costa Rica, and Hawaii in addition to several other places in the United States. Pete was an amazing host and cook. He loved having a houseful of guests and making sure that everyone was having a great time. He often hosted the neighbor kids at the backyard pool. Pete was a lover of music and movies. He had a knack for picking the best movies. But, maybe his greatest passion was his love of sports. Pete was an athlete and was a talented runner, basketball player, and golfer. He found great joy in watching his girls run races and play games. He was a die-hard Gopher and Twin’s fan and watched as many games as he could.

Pete was diagnosed with late stage head and neck cancer in 2005. He had several rounds of radiation, chemo therapy, surgeries and gene therapy to fight the cancer. At one point, Pete was told that he had a 1% chance of survival. Always the optimist, Pete naturally assumed that he would be the 1% statistic and he was right. Pete’s survival came with consequences and the affects of radiation had a progressive impact to his quality of life. In spite of the myriad of issues he dealt with, he always considered himself to be the luckiest man alive.

Pete was kind, loving and giving and will be remembered as a champion for the under dog.  He was a proud feminist and a staunch supporter of all of his girls.
